Benefit from the movements

Indices trading is different to trading a stock or a currency because you benefit from the movements of an economy rather than a single company or currency.

Price movement

The movements of an index directly relate to the price movements of all of the shares within that index. When trading a single company you are putting all your eggs in one basket.

Example

Index trading, on the other hand, allows you to benefit from 20, 50, 100 companies all at once. If one of these companies is struggling that doesn't mean the entire index will suffer. Although all types of trading involves risk, indices trading is often seen as a more stable option.

The Origins of Stock Indices

The concept of indices dates back to the late 19th century, when financial markets were becoming more active and complex. In 1896, Charles Dow, co-founder of Dow Jones & Company, introduced the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) — the first-ever stock market index. It tracked 12 major industrial companies in the U.S. and was designed to give investors a clearer picture of how the market was performing overall.

Since then, indices have evolved to cover various sectors, regions, and types of companies. Today, there are thousands of indices around the world, including the S&P 500, NASDAQ Composite, FTSE 100, DAX, Nikkei 225, and more.

Stock Market Indices

Instead of choosing one stock, why not follow the whole market? These indices combine top companies into a single instrument you can trade.

Currency Index

The US Dollar Index (USDX) tracks the performance of the U.S. dollar against six major currencies. It's a key tool to assess dollar strength across global markets.

Volatility Index

The VIX Index, also called the “fear index,” measures expected volatility in the U.S. stock market over the next 30 days. It tends to spike during periods of uncertainty.

Asia-Pacific Futures Indices

These futures-based indices give you direct access to South Korea’s dynamic and fast-growing equity markets — including large-cap leaders and tech-driven innovators.

The Role and Impact of Indices in Markets

Stock indices are vital tools in modern financial markets, providing investors with a way to track the performance of entire sectors, markets, or economies. From the DJIA to the S&P 500 and beyond, indices have shaped the way people invest and trade globally.

Indices not only provide a benchmark for market performance but also serve as investable products. Through tools like Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) and CFDs (Contract for Difference), investors can gain exposure to entire indices without directly buying individual stocks. Indices offer diversified exposure, reducing risk compared to single-stock investments.

In the modern world of indices trading, investors can trade indices through derivative products such as CFDs, which allow them to speculate on the price movements of indices without owning the underlying stocks. This type of trading allows for broader market exposure with relatively lower capital requirements.
